Where the monsters are
Yesterday I visited my friend Michelle and her Friendly Monsters in Rotterdam. I’ve been a huge fan of her work since the moment we’ve met and along the way, my family and I adopted a large amount of her Friendly Monsters. Friendly Monsters are hardworking little creatures. They love to hold back doors that have a habit of closing when you don’t want to (Doormonsters), some of them keep you company while taking a bath (Tubmonsters) and I myself have a monster, Leah, that’s fond of eating up my wallet, keys and diary, but burbs them up on command. (Leah also loves to go to the movies, so sometimes I take her if she promises not to burb too hard during the movie.)It was such a lovely day! In the evening we met up with Diana of HomeMadeHappiness and Ine of SecondHandy to talk a night long about the creative community, thrifting, moving, running a shop and just be very happy with all of it…
Gisteren bezocht ik Michelle en haar Vriendelijke Monsters in Rotterdam. Ik ben een groot fan van haar werk en sinds onze eerste ontmoeting hebben ik en mijn familie al best een aantal monsters in onze gezinnen opgenomen. Vriendelijke Monsters zijn echte harde werkers. Zo zijn er monsters die deuren voor je openhouden (die deuren die een neiging hebben steeds dicht te vallen), er zijn wasmonsters die gek zijn op badderen en ik heb een monster, Leah, die mijn portefeuille, sleutels en agenda voor mij draagt en ze opboert als ik ze nodig heb. (Leah houdt erg van de bioscoop, dus soms mag ze mee onder de voorwaarde dat ze niet te hard boert tijdens de film.) Het was een ontzettend gezellige dag. ’s Avonds ontmoetten we Diana van HomeMadeHappiness en Ine van SecondHandy om de rest van de avond vol te praten over de creatieve community, kringloopvondsten, verhuizen, een webwinkel hebben en met dat alles heel erg blij te zijn…

Treasures from Budapest
Alright people, this is the last post about my trip to Budapest, I promise! I think it is a good idea to close this series with a little post about the treasures I brought home from my trip. Budapest has a tradition of folk-art and since folkloric means “a lot of colors and flowers“, you can quite imagine how bezerk I went when I discovered loads and loads of stalls filled with colory/flowery articles at the Central Market Hall. My companions kept asking “Haven’t you bought enough of those ornaments, what on earth are you gonna do with all those little hearts?”. Do you recognize that feel of joy knowing that your suitcase is packed with new treasures you can cheer up your home with? Love that! So that’s what I took home: a lot of good, good memories (thanks guys!) and a bag full of felt hearts.
Oké mensen, dit is het laatste bericht over mijn trip naar Boedapest, ik beloof het. Het lijkt mij toepasselijk om deze serie af te sluiten met een verhaaltje over de schatten die ik mee naar huis heb genomen. In Boedapest blijkt de folkloretrend nog steeds springlevend en aangezien folklore betekent “heel veel kleur en bloemen“, kan je begrijpen dat ik helemaal over mijn kokosmakroon ging toen ik in de Grote Markthal een verdieping aantrof die volstond met kraampjes met folkloristische spulletjes. Mijn reisgezelschap bleef maar vragen wat ik in hemelsnaam met al die hangertjes moest. Ken je dat gevoel, de wetenschap dat je bij thuiskomst een heleboel nieuwe vondsten hebt uit te pakken om je huis mee te versieren? Och, dat is zo leuk! Dus dat is wat ik mee naar huis nam: een heleboel mooie herinneringen (bedankt, lieverds!) en een tas vol met vilten hartjes.
